It is the terrace of Perla di Positano that makes this holiday a real hidden gem. Its panoramic views across the bay of Positano are simply breathtaking and rather magical when the coastline is lit up when the sun goes down. This haven of peace and tranquillity is just a stone’s throw (60 steps down to road level from the ground floor) from all the hustle and bustle of Positano life and all it has to offer. The ancient white villa has been in the owner’s family since 1836 and has been carefully and most considerately restored and refurbished in 2009 to bring her back to her enchanting self once more.
This cool, fresh retreat is a delightful contrast to the bustling stairways and porticoes, of the shops and artisans and the restaurants and cafe bars below. Peaceful and tranquil yet within walking distance of the bus stop, the grocery store, the restaurants and cafe bars and of course..... the glorious sands of the beach.
There is a bus service for all those with weary legs from bottom to top or for those wishing to conserve their energy, from top to bottom! All for just €1,10 (July 2010). Leave the car behind, with parking being both expensive and difficult, walking is part of the fun and the exploration here in Positano.
Perla di Positano is a self-contained apartment yet forms part of a larger household. The extremely friendly and helpful owner lives in the apartment below and will ensure all guests have a very personal experience with all they need at hand.
Location
Positano is one of the most admired and visited coastal areas in the world and indeed the most celebrated of all the towns in the region. Not only is it the favoured destination of the rich, famous and the celebrity but the Costiera Amalfitana was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997. This place has it all!
This picture postcard town is world famous for its heady mix of houses painted pink, terracotta and peach, of elegant and fashionable shops and of fine restaurants and hotels, which all cling in tiers as they seemingly tumble down the mountainside.
Above the town you are greeted by a rush of the senses; of lemon and orange groves, flowers of all colours, shapes and sizes, olive groves and gardens, and with a breathtaking turquoise ocean backdrop. As you journey down this ‘town of stairways’, through narrow porticoes, past the artisans and elegant shops that sit harmoniously together, you finally welcome the Spiaggia Grande with its clear waters and beautiful beaches.
Positano is the place to abandon your shoes and replace them with a beautiful pair of hand-crafted sandals made to measure whilst you wait. Stilettos are a thing of the past in this stairway to heaven. Cloths and materials used by local artisans are now an essential part of Moda Positano, now a very popular and famous design label.
The Piazza dei Mulini, the main plaza is just a short walk from Perla di Positano and captures the rather magical and bustling atmosphere of Positano.
Whilst out shopping, you may come across all things lemon..... the official symbol of Positano you will find this citrus fruit on all things painted, printed and infused!
For those looking to explore the Amalfi in its entirety, ferries dot the turquoise waters as they trip over to the exclusive island of Capri, to Salerno, Ischia, Sorrento and the bustling city of Naples.
