What a truly magnificent position and a simply perfect base to explore the dramatic Ligurian coastline.  This delightful and very elegant stone cottage nestled within the hillside sits on a hill above the beautiful town of Bonassola just a short walk away and with access to the world-renowned and UNESCO world heritage listed Cinque Terre.

During our visit to Casa dei Limoni, the fisherman were out on the crystal clear waters below whilst the sun shone on the white cliffs that drop dramatically to the sea.  The gardens themselves are home to a whole host of trees, plants and the most wonderful of lemon trees with an area for al fresco dining and relaxation in the sun.  The garden drops below to a private driveway, access for Limoni residents and to four other local villas.  Therefore this villa although with spectacular open views is not suitable for younger guests.

Situated uphill and behind the house is a swimming pool, ideal for cooling off and this is open until 4th September.

Stepping inside this light, airy and very elegant cottage, one will notice the smaller details, those little touches there to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.

The owners of Limoni reside in the villa next door during July and August and generally one week each month throughout the year.

Take in the views during a short walk down to the gorgeous little town of Bonassola (for those who are a little less exercise friendly a drive down to the town is also possible - there is a reserved parking space in the town for guests at Casa dei Limoni to use. A car is also recommended for any heavy shopping).  This elegant town is typical of this region and has some beautiful piazzas and streets bustling with restaurants, bars and local craft shops.  Whilst many tourists head to the Cinque Terre, Bonassola just a few miles north is a much mellower alternative.   Seafood of course is the order of the day so do ensure you indulge whilst here!

The train station provides a fabulous journey of just 15 minutes to the Cinque Terre and La Spezia is just 30 minutes away.  The beach here offers a place to soak up the sun, together with fishing, sailing and a number of water sports.  The hills along this coastline offer some of the best hiking and bike trails in Europe so pop on your boots and get walking!

Liguria is the slender strip of coastline that stretches from Tuscany up to the French border and has attracted sun-seekers from all over Europe for well over a century.  These glamorous seaside towns reminiscent of 1950’s film set elegance, is home to the ‘belle époque’ with villages such as San Remo and Portofino.

Genoa the capital, sits central to the Ligurian coastline.  To the west of the city (western Riviera) is known as Riviera di Ponente and includes the famous resort of San Remo.  Heading south towards Tuscany, lies Riviera di Levante and includes the Cinque Terre and the celebrity hideaway harbour town of Portofino.

The beach is home to the sun-seeker and the sportsmen with activities to keep all ages busy including sailing, diving and rafting.  There is also a whole host of trekking trails and mountain bike and climbing enthusiasts that swarm to this region each year.

The Cinque Terre is five perilously perched villages atop a short stretch of cliff-face and is a both a national park and protected marine area and appears on the UNESCO World Heritage list.  It is extremely popular with hikers and those who appreciate natural beauty, drawing large numbers in the summer season.

But Liguria is also rich in cultural experience; Genoa is a city rich in art and home to the famous art college Musei di Strada Nuova.  The medieval old town is actually the largest in Europe and is a labyrinth of alleyways, 16th Century Palazzos, shops, restaurants and Romanesque churches.

The region has a stunning artistic heritage in the shape of the Ligurian craftsmen skilled in making products that have stood the test of time.  Lace, embroidery and macramé from Portofino, silk damask from the Zogli area and from the small village of Pietrabruna the ancient essence of lavender.
