A romantic visit to Tuscany or a week away with friends, this former castle perched high within the Tuscan hills offers accommodation for up to 30 guests. With a view to blow your socks off and only 7 km away from the heart of one of the most historic Tuscan hilltop towns, Panzano in Chianti, Montegonzi offers a fantastic place to stay for almost all in Florence.
The location of the medieval castle was always a strategic decision and this one is no exception. Known to have controlled the communication between Florence and Siena, it lies above Greve with panoramic views of the typical Tuscan lush green hillsides, vineyards and olive groves. On a clear day guests can see down the valley and beyond Florence, and with this location brings peace and tranquillity each and every day.
The owners of Montegonzi have carefully and lovingly restored it back to its once former glory and this hamlet is now a combination of 9 individual apartments with a separate cottage lying within the grounds. All bear the signs of its history; exposed stone walls, vaulted ceilings and original detailing and features to combine with high quality furnishings and standard of facilities.
All residents of the apartments enjoy the beautiful swimming pool perched high above, with loungers, parasols and lush green gardens. The cottage enjoys its own private pool and gardens. There is a stone built BBQ for all to enjoy and a laundry room too free of charge.
The resident's reception is managed by the on-site caretaker so there is always someone on hand ready to help.
An excellent base to explore Tuscany, the accommodation here at Montegonzi offers an alternative to the larger villas or independent cottages in this region.
*The WiFi area is located outside the Reception only.
Just 7 km away from the bustling piazza of Greve in Chianti, a popular Tuscan town is always a hive of activity and each Saturday even more so as it holds its weekly market. With a range of bars, restaurants and pizzerias there is always choice during your stay.
Greve right in the heart of the Chianti Classico wine region is home to the largest wine fair in Chianti and is held every September. Wine tours and tasting experiences sweep as far as the eye can see.
The landscapes surrounding Greve offer some quite literally breathtaking hikes through the Monte San Michele Nature Park, but also pleasant strolls for those a little less adventurous! And for those who appreciate the historic artefacts this region has to offer, the church of Santa Croce houses some of the most magnificent paintings from the school of the Fra Angelico. Greve also houses the San Francesco Museum of Sacred Art. Originally built in the 16th Century and completed later in 1866, it has a collection of valuable ecclesiastical artefacts and artwork.
Explore the nearby quaint village of Lamole, known for its weekly concerts of classical music from July to September, it is definitely worth a visit. The famed hilltop town of Panzano is also a short distance with a popular Sunday market and an even more popular butcher/restaurateur. The New York Times and Le Figaro call him 'the world's most famous butcher' and is a favourite with celebrities and royalty alike. Dario Cecchini's empire to date extends to three restaurants all within the village with the simple premise; to offer really good food at a low price.
Greve is also within easy reach of the art cities of Florence (32km) and Siena (43km).
